President Barack Obama speaks often about the power of empathy and the need for more of it in the world today. He has said:
"The biggest deficit in the world today is a deficit of empathy. We need for people to stand in others' shoes and see through their eyes." One way we can bridge the empathy gap and respond to Obama's call to service is by growing an Empathy Corps in our communities: a network of people who are committed to community service and who believe that strengthening empathy skills will contribute significantly to the work at hand. The Empathy Corps is a network, not an organization. It is a grassroots movement that is poised to take root in communities throughout the country and the world. A local Empathy Corps will meet for 2-hour practice sessions to learn & hone empathy skills and create opportunities to serve our community by offering empathy in community organizations, cohousing communities, schools, family courts, shelters, and everywhere people are longing to be heard & empowered to create meaningful lives. If you would like to serve your community in this way, and learn and practice empathy skills and help others do the same, you are warmly invited to come to any or all of these free 2-hour trainings. |
