It’s baffling. You’re smart, you know what you want, and you know what to do. Then for some mysterious reason, part of you just won’t budge…or worse steers you in a different direction, taking you farther away from the path of your desires and goals. Then the vicious cycle begins, judging oneself as being stupid, lazy, or not good enough, then becoming resigned and give up, or punishing oneself and doubling down on the efforts. Woe to be human!

What are these self-sabotaging behaviors and what can we do about them? Often in childhood, in a time of overwhelming stress and confusion, we make unconscious decisions, or develop unconscious relationship patterns in order to survive. We call these implicit patterns Sacred Vows* or Hidden Contracts and they may still be unconsciously operating, even though they no longer serve us today. Sometimes we get caught in double binds-intractable opposing beliefs or split loyalties, that can keep us stuck, driving us to escape through distraction and addictions. e.g. I must be the best in my field so that I can always have a job and provide/ I cannot surpass my father so that I can always have his love and attention.

Fortunately we can uncover these unconscious beliefs and patterns, re-negotiate them, and make new choices. In this highly experiential workshop, we use dyads, role-plays, and the tools of Nonviolent Communication and Interpersonal Neurobiology.
