More than ever, people of diverse gender identities are looking for ways to undo the harmful patterns of patriarchy that dominate US American culture. Depending on how we were socialized, though, the work can look quite different. Men, for example, are being asked to summon more emotional capacity. But how can those socialized as men demonstrate emotional fluency when they’ve rarely been taught how? And women and non-binary folks are being invited to step into their voice and power. But how do those socialized as women speak their fullest truth when the dominant paradigm has hardly allowed them to do so?
Nonviolent or compassionate communication (NVC) is a simple yet powerful set of tools to equip people of all gender identities to start answering some of these questions. Often people socialized as women, for instance, learn to speak clearly about what matters to them and make effective requests of others, while those socialized as men build more capacity for deep listening and compassion. And for those of us who don’t identify with either socialization, the practice can offer more capacity for processing the nuances and complexities of self-understanding and clear communication within a paradigm that often denies both. These practices also prove invaluable as we continue to work together to organize in political, social and economic spheres for deep, systemic changes to the dominant paradigm. **WORKSHOP DETAILS** This workshop is a total of 12 hours of live, interactive small group instruction and guidance spread across six Wednesday evening sessions beginning Wednesday, April 17 and concluding Wednesday, May 22. This is NOT a prerecorded or self-paced course, though recordings of the sessions will be available to participants after each session. This series is highly interactive and experiential. There will be ample opportunities to apply and practice these tools as we learn them. Though much of the learning will be in a mixed gendered (virtual) space facilitated by a mixed gendered facilitation team, there will also be opportunities for learning in gender-specific (virtual) spaces. While this workshop will be grounded in the practice and principles of Nonviolent Communication, it will be supported by an understanding of interpersonal neurobiology, a growing area of study that’s adding to our knowledge of how humans thrive. Nonviolent communication is a practical and accessible way to apply these new findings - that humans thrive in relationships with warmth, resonance, and attunement.
**FACILITATORS** Amanda Blaine has tons of privilege. She’s a white, cisgendered, straight, double-Ivy-League-educated, middle class, Jewish woman. And she’s hellbent on using every ounce of it to leverage change. She wants to support you to learn the skills that make the difference between “heartbreaking waste of time” and “heart-opening, get-lots-of-important-shit-done-together collaboration.” She makes her home on Vashon Island, occupied Puyallup land near Seattle, Washington. Nicole Bauman is a white, middle class, queer, genderqueer, farmer, healer, movement builder and parent, rooted in community and organizing in the Rust Belt city of Elkhart, IN, on occupied Potawatomi territory. Nonviolent Communication has been an empowering tool for Nicole’s own personal healing and transformation, and has also increased her capacity to show up more skillfully to communication, conflict and collaboration interpersonally and within the movement. Nicole is excited to share all of this with you! Josh Blaine is a community song leader and organizer based out of Austin, TX who's found that unlearning his patterns of white and male privilege is best done in community. Since the Fall of 2017, he's been organizing other men who are committed to undoing male domination patterns by leveraging the tools of nonviolent communication as a backbone of the work. |
