"Communication" is just the tip of the iceberg of what Nonviolent Communication (NVC) offers. Yes, NVC offers ways of communicating that can support addressing challenging situations in more satisfying ways. And beyond that, it offers ways of thinking about things, and orienting our attention, to create more peace, closeness, joy and understanding in our relationships with others and with ourselves, regardless of what sort of situation we find ourselves in.

People are sometimes misled by the name "Nonviolent Communication", thinking NVC must be mainly about addressing situations where anger and potential violence are present. While NVC can be very useful in such situations, that's not the main focus. The "violence" NVC invites us to address has to do with patterns of thinking and speaking that pervade most cultures, which lead to people feeling alienated from one another. NVC invites awareness of these patterns that create unnecessary suffering, and offers profound insights and skills to support us in making life better, for ourselves and those we interact with.

Fully mastering NVC is a big project, since NVC has such a depth of ideas and practices. Fortunately, even a little exposure to its ideas can be really helpful. In this one-day workshop, we'll explore some of the most important ideas, and participate in exercises and demonstrations to help people "get" what it's all about, and how it can be applied.

While NVC is sometimes taught via some "recipes" for how things can be done, attempts to use recipes can backfire unless people understand the underlying principles. Principles, on the other hand, can often be usefully applied even when clarity about formulas is lacking. So, my own approach focuses on understanding concepts and principles, and building up practical experience in working with these.

Please join me for a day of engaging the basics of this wonderful way of speaking and living.

Let me (Bob (b o b AT DOMAIN nwcompass~org)) know if you need a ride from the ferry or have questions.
