In this seemingly difficult culture our teens grow up in how do we support our youth and teens to face the challenges of today and stay connected to what we value? Come learn how to be a resilient, grounded parent along with ways that we can build & maintain connected relationships with our children, and therefore strong families that can promote peace in this world at a time that we need it most.
Stop by for one or more workshops/classes designed to improve resilience through mindfulness, compassion, understanding, and balance. There will be four sessions, each 90 minutes. Bring a lunch, or food will be available for purchase before the Keynote Presentation. You are welcome to attend part of the day or all of it! 9:00-10:30 (for adults) Compassionate Communication (Marcia Christen) Marcia Christen, Certified Trainer with the Center for Nonviolent Communication with over 20 years experience in parent education and communication, is passionate about sharing what has been so meaningful to her as a parent of 3 teenagers. 9:00-10:30 (for teens) Your Brain on Fire: Managing Passion (Kathie McCarthy) Kathie McCarthy, MA,LMP, understands the interplay between our bodies, our minds and our deepest longings. She counsels parents and youth and teaches at Hyla Middle School and Grace Episcopal Church. She is proud of her two fledged young adults. 10:45-12:15 (for adults) Parenting Mindfully (Jen Breen) Jen Breen lives on Bainbridge Island with her husband Tom and four children and teaches yoga and mindfulness to moms, dads, grandpas, grandmas, teens and kids. OR Crafting Resilience in Ourselves and Our Families (Lailey Jenkins) Lailey Jenkins, LICSW, is a psychotherapist and creativity coach on a mission to help clients hone their resilience and tap their creative potential so they can lead more authentic connected lives. 10:45-12:15 (for teens) Yoga for Teens (Katie Zonoff) Katie Zonoff teaches Humanities at Bainbridge High School, and leads yoga and other classes at Bainbridge Yoga House as well. 12:30-2:00 KEYNOTE (for all) Understanding the Teen Brain (Elizabeth Turner) The latest research on the neurobiology of the teen mind shows us a stage of dynamic development that is wrought with both extreme vulnerability and extraordinary promise. This workshop will give a clear and useful overview of the distinctive features of of the teen brain - focusing concerns such as addictions, motivation, stress, sleep, emotionality, planning and risk-taking. It will also cover the idiosyncratic strengths of the adolescent mind and offer strategies for harnessing its astonishing potential for learning, creativity and relationship. Elizabeth Turner, MSW, LICSW, is a psychotherapist, consultant, and founder of the Bodhi Center for Psychotherapy, Mindfulness and Education on Bainbridge Island. 2:15-3:45 (for adults) Parenting Mindfully (Jen Breen) OR Crafting Resilience in Ourselves and Our Families (Lailey Jenkins) 2:15-3:45 (for teens) Finding Calm- Mindfully Navigating Stress (Sue Steindorf) Sue Steindorf is a physical therapist and yoga teacher working to help people of all ages find their potential with and through their bodies. She lives on Bainbridge with her two teenage children and husband. |
